Winchell Lake, East Humboldt Range
Winchell Lake, at 8570 feet, rests in another dramatic basin, with green, sloping hillsides rising up to steep, jagged peaks, where the crest reaches heights over 10,000 feet in less than a mile from the lakeshore. Three triangular spires above the inlet form an impressive backdrop to the dark waters of the lake. Verdant meadows at the far end blend into dense green foliage around the rest of the shoreline. A smattering of limber pines dots the southwest slopes in the otherwise open basin, which plays host to a wide range of vegetation. Sunrises are particularly inspiring over the Pequop Mountains to the east.
Camping within the East Humboldt Range is primitive, and around Winchell Lake is no exception. In the absence of developed campsites, make sure you restore your camp area to its original state before leaving. Firewood around the lake is virtually nonexistent, so don’t plan on building a campfire unless you’re packing firewood. Fishing, however, is reportedly fair for cutthroat trout.
The upper basin provides plenty of opportunities for further exploration, for scrambling up peaks, or for looking for wildlife. In the early evening you may be fortunate enough to be serenaded by coyotes. Although the trail south of the lake is poorly maintained, traveling another 3.5 miles to Lizzie’s Basin, in the shadow of 11,306-foot Hole in the Mountain Peak, makes an excellent trip extension.
